Pitch products are used for the synthetic graphite electrodes of the electric furnaces for manufacturing new iron from scrap. They play an important role in ensuring that the electrode materials are capable of withstanding severe mechanical and thermal shock. They are also used for making electrodes for aluminum refineries and refractory for steel-making, thereby contributing significantly to the production of iron, aluminum, and other metal products.

Binder pitch

With a broad range of products and excellent product packing, JFE Chemical satisfies the needs of customers both in Japan and worldwide.

Binder materials for synthetic graphite electrodes

These pitch products are used as binder materials for coke aggregate in casting processes for manufacturing synthetic graphite electrodes. To meet the demands of customers, we offer a wide range of products to suit the required softening point.

Binder materials for aluminum refinery electrodes

These pitch products are used as binder materials for coke aggregate in manufacturing processes for aluminum refinery electrodes. We ship these products all over the world.

Binder materials for special carbon materials

These pitch products are used as binder materials for making graphite crucibles for metal smelting, granulated activated carbon, and other products.

Impregnated pitch

Our original, innovative manufacturing technology results in excellent impregnation.

Impregnants for synthetic graphite electrodes

These pitch products are used for impregnating and compacting calcination electrodes in calcination processes for the manufacture of synthetic graphite electrodes. To achieve a radical improvement in impregnation, we developed a “QI-less” pitch having a QI reduced to almost zero.

Impregnants for special carbon materials

These impregnated pitches with a low QI (≤5%) enable smoother refractory materials.

Main applications

Special pitches

The fixed carbon content of these pitches can be freely controlled by heat treatment to achieve a binding force strong enough to enable high-strength products.

These pitch products are available with a softening point of 110°C to 350°C, and a fixed carbon content of 60% to 90%. We offer both a coarse ground pitch of grain diameter 0.5 to 1 mm, and a fine ground pitch of 20 to 40 µm, so customers can select the optimal product for their needs.

Features
  • High mesophase rate
  • High softening temperature
  • High carbonization yield
  • Self-sinterability resulting in strong carbon bonds
  • Low benzopyrene level
Main applications
  • Casting material for refractory in steel-making
  • Repair materials for refractory in steel-making
  • Modifying additive material for other materials (e.g., resins)
(e.g., refractory, resins, carbon composite components, electric brushes, brake materials)
  • Carbon (graphite) mold material (for isotropic, high-density carbon materials)

Anhydrous tar

This eco-friendly binder material undergoes minimal quality change and has little odor, thanks to significantly reduced levels of moisture and light-boiling fractions such as naphthalene.

This eco-friendly binder material undergoes minimal quality change and has little odor, thanks to significantly reduced levels of moisture and light-boiling fractions such as naphthalene.

This product boasts a dominant market share as a binder for blast furnace mud, and recently it has been adopted for a broad range of applications, including granulated activated carbon, graphite crucibles, and special carbon products. We export this product overseas in ISO containers.

Features
  • Stable quality
Taking full advantage of the latest distillation theory, and measurement and control technology, high quality is maintained at all times.
  • Good storage stability
Using a distillation process we invented ourselves, naphthalene and other light fractions are eliminated to the greatest degree possible. This means that volatilization of light fractions during storage and after production is limited to very low levels.
  • Ability to adjust viscosity
Thanks to an innovative compounding technique we developed, the viscosity of the tar can be adjusted to suit the changing needs of customers.
For now, we are offering two versions for different applications—a “low viscosity” and “high viscosity” product.
Main applications
  • Binder for blast furnace mud material
  • Binder for granulated activated carbon
  • Binder for special carbon (e.g., graphite crucible for metal smelting)
