The coal tar, crude benzene and other substances obtained from JFE Steel’s coking plants are used to produce high-quality intermediate materials that are vital to a wide variety of industries.

Pitch products
Pitch products are used for the graphite electrodes of the electric furnaces for manufacturing new iron from scrap. They play an important role in ensuring that synthetic graphite electrodes are capable of withstanding severe mechanical and thermal shock. Pitch products are also used for making electrodes for aluminum refineries, refractory for steelmaking, activated carbon binders, and a wide range of other applications.

Creosote oils
Fine particles of carbon known as “carbon black” are used in large volume as a reinforcing material to enhance the abrasion resistance of rubber for automobile tires. Creosote oils are used as a raw material for making carbon black, which is also used for reinforcing a variety of black resins. Carbon black is also used to make black inks and photocopier toner. JFE Chemical is Japan’s biggest supplier of creosote oils by volume, shipping to customers all over the country.

Napthalene and phthalic anhydride
Naphthalene is used in making phthalic anhydride, dye intermediates, surfactants, and also as an ingredient of basic chemical substances. All of these are important raw materials for a wide range of applications, e.g., as plasticizers to enhance the flexibility of PVC resins, as dispersants for emulsion polymerization to enhance the flexibility of rubber in tire manufacturing, and as water reducing agents for concrete to strengthen electric power poles and Hume pipes.

Benzenes
Benzenes are used in the production of styrene (a raw material for plastics), phenols (a raw material for resins and adhesives), and cyclohexane (a raw material for nylon). They are also used in the manufacture of rubber and lubricants.
Toluene is used as a solvent for making paints and inks, while mixed xylene is used as a solvent for paints and oil refining.

Phenols and cresols
Phenols are basic chemicals used as raw materials for resins and flame retardants. Cresols are used as raw materials for making semiconductor sealing materials, insulating varnishes, and medicines.

Ammonium sulfate and liquid ammonia
Ammonium sulfate is a commonly used nitrogen fertilizer, characterized by its immediate effectiveness. Liquid ammonia is used widely as a raw material in fertilizers and for denitrification.
